British Chess Company Chess Board c1900, a rare tournament
size chess board - Mahogany frame with spline mitre joints,
the board laid with alternating Rosewood and Satinwood squares, each
square measuring 5.7cm.
Stamped "BRITISH CHESS Co... STROUD. GLOS.” to the top and
bottom edge. In good overall condition but obviously showing signs
of use, it has had a light clean and has come up really well.
The British Chess Company was started in 1891 and was a
direct rival to Jaques, selling quality made chess sets and
promoting the business through tournaments, advertising and
publishing, however the firm stopped producing their own chess sets
around 1901-1903 and disappeared soon after making their sets quite
rare and sought after.
